The head of Latvia proclaimed a new law on territorial reform

Latvian President Egil Levits on June 22 proclaimed a new law on administrative-territorial reform. This was reported by the portal Diena.lv. Journalists note that the new law describes the conditions, procedure for determining, registering, changing borders and relations between the administrative center and territories, as well as territorial division into districts and districts, the principles for determining the status of settlements, and the procedure for financing them. The law provides that the Latvian government will determine a detailed plan for financing the regions until December 1, 2021, when a new division should earn. A number of European organizations, as well as 46 heads of Latvian regions, asked Levits not to proclaim a new law, and send it for revision to parliament. These appeals were ignored. According to the new division, the number of local governments in Latvia will be reduced from 119 to 42.
